Publications

Currently there is little or no relevant literature on mental health and AIDS available in Serbia. The translation and publication of such literature is an essential component of the project. Some of it will be used in the training activities, and some new materials generated where there are gaps.
The main function of the new expert centres is to act as a national resource and training centre. Therefore it will maintain an archive/library, and add locally generated materials to its international collection.
Publication process includes reviewing existing literature and compiling annotated bibliography; developing training materials and background literature; translating selected materials into Serbian; printing and dissemination of materials.

HIV treatment access, delivery and uncertainty: a qualitative study in Serbia and Montenegro
Sarah Bernays, Tim Rhodes and Ana Prodanovic
January 2007
UNDP Report, Belgrade

The report presents the following findings from a study among people living with HIV/ AIDS and service providers:

  • access to HIV treatment in Serbia and Montenegro is uncertain which threatens the manageability of HIV as a chronic illness
  • this has a psychological and social impact on people living with HIV
  • uncertain access to treatment undermines HIV community action and weakens efforts to fight social stigma associated with HIV

During 2005-2006, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) at the University of London in collaboration with the HIV Prevention for Vulnerable Populations Initiative (HPVPI) in Belgrade , undertook the first qualitative study to describe the experiences of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Serbia and in Montenegro .

The study set out to describe, from the perspectives of PLHIV and HIV service providers, how they manage their HIV/AIDS on a daily basis and the issues they face. The research focused on the realities of managing HIV treatment in a setting where resources for delivering such treatment are stretched and investigated the impact that this has on HIV positive individuals.

Little qualitative research has previously been done which documents how PLHIV manage HIV/AIDS when access to HIV treatment is uncertain. In the context of global scale up the fallout from failing to provide sustainable and continuous HIV treatment needs to be recognised and appropriate support provided. This report has pertinence for informing advocacy and policy locally, regionally and more broadly in demonstrating the impact of fragile HIV treatment delivery on people living with HIV/AIDS and community action.
